TENS of thousands of protesters marched through Hong Kong today in the latest demonstration attacking China and the special administrative region’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

Around 10,000 defied police to gather in the Admiralty, the district where the city’s government sits, demanding Ms Lam’s resignation and an independent investigation into police tactics at previous demonstrations, which have seen violent clashes.

Protests began last month against an extradition Bill which would allow Hong Kong authorities to extradite criminals to other jurisdictions, including mainland China, on a case by case basis. Currently Hong Kong only has extradition arrangements with 20 other states.

Though the Bill was brought forward in response to the case of a Taiwanese murderer who fled to Hong Kong after killing his pregnant girlfriend and is still at liberty there, it has been seized on by activists who say it would allow China to persecute political opponents.
