Sport in Brief: 24/07/2014

RUGBY: Simon Johnson, who was chief operating officer of England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup, has been appointed as a non-executive member of the Rugby Football League’s independent board of directors.

Johnson, whose appointment was made at the RFL Council annual meeting at Langtree Park, St Helens, yesterday, replaces former Manchester United director Maurice Watkins, who has stepped down from the board.

BOXING: Tyson Fury will meet Alexander Ustinov in Manchester on Saturday following Dereck Chisora’s injury-enforced withdrawal from the main event.

Chisora pulled out of the rematch, which is to be rescheduled, with a fractured hand but Fury will still be in action with Ustinov providing a high-quality alternative.

The 37-year-old has won all but one of his 30 fights with his only defeat coming against respected Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev.

CRICKET: Jonathan Trott has made his first century since returning to cricket in Warwickshire’s County Championship Division One clash against Sussex.

Trott returned from England’s disastrous tour of Australia following the first Test in November due to a stress-related illness and took five months off from cricket.

He reached 106 at Horsham yesterday before being caught behind off the bowling of Steve Magoffin.

CYCLING: Poland’s Rafal Majka claimed his second victory of the 2014 Tour de France on stage 17 as Vincenzo Nibali further enhanced his hold on the race leader’s yellow jersey.

Nibali finished third on the stage, 46 seconds behind Majka, but crucially enhancing his advantage over his rivals for the top spot on the podium in Paris on Sunday.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) is now five minutes 26 seconds behind after finishing 49 seconds behind Nibali yesterday.
