Defeat of nationalism 'essential' in taking on capitalism

Vince Mills believes Scottish Labour is moving left

A leading figure on the Scottish left has said the defeat of nationalism in September’s referendum is “essential” — but issued a warning to Labour leaders over the party’s political direction after a No vote.

Vince Mills, chair of the Scottish Labour Campaign for Socialism (CfS), said said that “initiatives and commitments” made at Perth “suggest that at long last the Scottish Labour Party really is moving left.

He argues that the Labour left must work with trade unions “in order to advance the argument that only a united British working class can take on the power of capital vested in the City of London.”

But he warned: “If there is no change in the direction of Scottish Labour, and the Scottish Labour manifesto in 2016 does not reflect this change, then calls for a new beginning for the left outside the Labour Party will have enormous resonance.”
