Hosni Mubarak and sons jailed for stealing public funds

AN EGYPTIAN court sentenced ousted president Hosni Mubarak to three years in prison today for stealing public funds.

Judge Osama Shaheen also sentenced each of Mr Mubarak’s sons to four years in jail on the same charges.

The quartet were fined 21.197 million Egyptian pounds (£1.8 million) and ordered to repay about 125 million Egyptian pounds (£10.4m) of funds the court said they had stolen.

Mr Mubarak has been under house arrest at a military hospital since August pending retrial in a case of complicity in killing protesters during the 2011 uprising that ended his rule.

It was not immediately clear if the three years that Mr Mubarak and his sons have already spent in jail would be counted toward the sentence or if Mr Mubarak would return to hospital or be sent to prison.
