Edinburgh tram finally gets rolling short and years late

Edinburgh’s new tram system finally rolled into action at the weekend — years late and millions over budget.

But despite the controversy it was standing room only on the first service at 5am on Saturday, and they’ve been busy ever since.

The construction of the single line from Edinburgh Airport to the city centre cost around £776 million.

The network was initially intended to be larger, stretching to the waterfront at Leith and Newhaven, and scheduled to be in operation in 2010.

The procurement shambles saw the main contractor halt work for months in a bitter public row with the tram company, and left just a single route.
