Palestine: Emergency vigil held at Downing St for children killed by Israeli playground bombing during Eid al-Fitr celebration

Palestine Solidarity Campaign urges PM David Cameron to stop massacre undertaken with 'support of the British government'

An emergency vigil was held in front of Downing Street yesterday with rows of flowers being laid for the Gaza children killed in a bombed playground during Eid celebrations.

At the protest organisers from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign brought a second letter to David Cameron urging him to intervene and put a stop to the massacre.

The vigil came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced further “aggressive” military action was to be taken.

PSC director Sarah Colborne told the Star that despite the Islamic holiday, “Israel was slaughtering Palestinian children” with “the support of the British government.”

Monday’s shelling of a park in the Shati refugee camp killed a total of 10, including nine children.

Before the vigil Mr Cameron had called for a ceasefire while blaming Hamas for the ongoing conflict. Rocket-firing from the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood was “how this started,” said the PM.

Israel has counted three civillian casualties since the beginning of Operation Protective Edge. Gazan authorities say the Palestinian death toll is now well over 1,100 people, the majority of victims being civilians.

“We’re calling for the government to demand an end to the killing, to impose sanctions on Israel and call an immediate end to its arms trade with that country,” added Ms Colborne.

The vigil will be followed by another demonstration outside London’s Israeli Embassy in south Kensington on Friday. Thousands are expected to assemble in what will be the fourth march in the capital.
