London Underground faces strike over electricity dispute

LONDON Underground faces total shutdown in a dispute involving workers who supply the network’s electricity.

Around 40 Power Control Room staff are due to strike for eight days from 8pm tonight in a dispute over pensions, length of service, working conditions and future jobs.

The dispute involves three unions — Unite, Rail Maritime Transport union (RMT) and Transport Salaried Staffs Association.

Last-ditch talks were taking place yesterday with the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service.

RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash said: “This dispute is over an all-out attack on the power control grade damage the futures of this key group of Tube workers.

“These staff members are effectively the national grid for London Underground and this action will have the most severe consequences for Tube operations but has been forced on us by management wrecking the earlier talks.”
