United Nations: £162m aid plea for Central African Republic refugees

UN launches fund for those fleeing CAR violence

The United Nations and aid groups have launched a $272 million (£162m) appeal to help people fleeing the continuing conflict in the Central African Republic.

The funds will be used to meet the needs of 360,000 people who have sought refuge from sectarian violence since December.

The news comes shortly after up to 7,000 people were forced to flee when a gun battle broke out between Chadian troops escorting a convoy of Muslim civilians and local militia, Doctors Without Borders said.

The Chadian force was escorting 540 Muslim residents of north-western town Bossangoa to Gore in Chad on April 11 when militia fighters attacked the convoy as it passed through Boguila, around 310 miles north of the capital Bangui.
