Algerian World Cup stars donate £5m bonuses to Gaza Strip

ALGERIA’S World Cup stars will donate their $9 million (£5.2m) tournament bonuses to people in the bombarded Gaza Strip.

Jordanian journalist Waleed Abu Nada said striker Islam Slimani made the revelation on Wednesday night.

Slimani, who scored twice in Brazil to help the Fennec Foxes to the last 16 for the first time in their history, reportedly said: “They need it more than us.”

Algeria has been a longstanding supporter of the Palestinian struggle.

Fennecs midfielder Sofiane Feghouli — who scored Algeria’s first World Cup goal in 28 years during the side’s 2-1 defeat to Belgium, dedicated the team’s successful run to “all Arabs, especially the people of Palestine” after they advanced from the group stages.

And the team proudly displayed the Palestinian flag alongside their own when they were greeted back to Algiers by thousands of cheering fans on an open-top bus ride.

The pledge comes as Israel has unleashed a fresh spate of airstrikes on the people of Gaza amid a mounting crackdown on Palestinians.

Britain-based Palestine Solidarity Campaign’s Sarah Colborne said the “beautiful act of solidarity” showed once again “the scale of international support for justice and human rights” and urged governments to follow suit.

She said: “In the West Bank and East Jerusalem, Palestinians are deluged under a wave of racism and violence, with Israeli settlers on the rampage, calling for ‘death to the Arabs’ and the bombing of Gaza.

“The principled stance of the Algeria football team should be matched by governments, including our own, in taking immediate action to end Israel's occupation, violence and racism against Palestinians and to end the siege on Gaza.”

The Greek national team also announced their intention to forfeit their World Cup bonus to help improve footballing facilities in Greece.

“We do not want extra bonuses, or money, we only play for Greece and its people,” the squad said in a message to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. “All we want is for you to support our effort to find land and create a sports centre that will house our national team.”
