Senior MPs demand explanation for delay in publication of Chilcot report on Iraq war

Commons public administration committee chairman Bernard Jenkin calls for clarity on disagreements over publication of private communications between Tony Blair and George Bush

Senior MPs warned yesterday about the “very serious” delay in the publication of the Chilcot report into the Iraq war.

John Chilcot’s inquiry completed its public hearings in 2011 but it hasn’t been published yet due to wrangling over the publication of private communications between ex-PM Tony Blair and then US president George Bush.

Commons public administration committee chairman Bernard Jenkin has demanded the Cabinet Office explain the hold-up.

“It’s very serious that this report is now at least four years overdue, so we’ve written to the minister to ask for an explanation as to why these delays have occurred, what is holding up the publication of the report and how these issues are going to be resolved,” Mr Jenkin said.

“On the basis of that we may well call for the minister, or indeed the Cabinet Secretary, to come and give us evidence to explain how they are going to sort this out.”

PM David Cameron said he expected the report to be published by the end of the year.
