Man City stars highest paid in the world

'Average' player gets £100k a week to kick a ball around

Manchester City players are raking in more cash than any others in the world.

Sportingintelligence's Global Sports Salaries Survey for 2014 found that average first-team pay at the club was £5.3 million a year - or £102,653 a week.

The only other team where the average player scoops six figures a week was baseball's New York Yankees at £101,666.

Premier League sides Manchester United (eighth, £83,120 a week) and Chelsea (10th, £76,626) also made it into the top 10.

Billionaire owners like Sheikh Mansour mean that a Man City player is paid nearly 230 times more than the average British worker.

The astronomical figures don't even include money for "endorsements or other extra-curricular activities," said Sportingintelligence.

"This is the fifth edition of Sportingintelligence's review of global pay in team sport and this year's report includes a section detailing the 100 teams who have paid the most money per average first-team player over five years.

"Barcelona top this list, with a 'typical' player at the Nou Camp earning £24,995,540 over the five seasons of the survey."

The Spanish giants and rivals Real Madrid faced each other in the Copa del Rey final yesterday, with the 22 on the pitch each scooping nearly an average £5m a year.

Manchester City is one of 76 clubs under a Uefa investigation over possible breaches of financial fair play rules.

Europe's governing body is expected to announce a decision in the coming days.

Financial fair play rules are intended to bring more stability to the league, stopping clubs spending beyond their means.

Punishments could range from fines to bans from European competition.
