John Cryer elected chair of Parliamentary Labour Party

Former Morning Star subeditor John Cryer MP has been elected unopposed as chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

The leftwinger issued an appeal last night for all Labour MPs to unite and work together for victory in May’s general election.

Blairite elements failed to win enough support for their scheme to find their own stalking horse.

Keen trade unionist Mr Cryer has been MP for Leyton and Wanstead since 2010.

Following his election, Mr Cryer told the Star: “This is a time to pull together, to get out there and knock lumps off this government, which is the most damaging class-ridden government we have seen in living memory.”

He was warmly welcomed by retiring chair Dave Watts to his new role last night.
