Sport in brief: 06/05/14

FOOTBALL: Louis van Gaal is expected to be at Old Trafford tonight to watch Manchester United take on Hull, with his appointment likely to be made after the game.

The Holland manager has long been the favourite to succeed David Moyes and it looks like United have their number one target.

The future of interim manager Ryan Giggs is unclear but it is expected that he will be offered a coaching role by the club.

FOOTBALL:  Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has been voted the 2014 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association.

The Uruguayan has scored 30 league goals in 35 games and has played a major role in helping the club fight for the league title this season.

He won the award with 51 per cent of the vote, pipping team-mate Steven Gerrard and Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure to the award.

RUGBY LEAGUE: London Broncos have announced Tony Rea will leave his role as head coach with immediate effect to be replaced by Joe Grima.

Rea, who has had a long association with the club, returned to coach the side for the second time in 2012, taking over from Rob Powell.

Chairman David Hughes said: “Tony was instrumental in saving the club. In hindsight maybe it was far too late but we did save the club.”

FOOTBALL: Lowestoft Town have gained promotion to the Conference South after beating Hornchurch 3-0 yesterday in the Ryman play-off final.

After three consecutive failings in the final, it was fourth time lucky for joint managers Mick Chapman and Ady Gallagher.

A first-half goal from Rob Eagle put Lowestoft ahead after 30 minutes.

Four minutes into the second-half Jake Reed doubled their lead and Curtis Haynes-Brown wrapped things up with 35 minutes of the game to go.
