20 Feet from Stardom (12A)

Directed by Morgan Neville

4 Stars

This is a dazzling documentary on backing singers. Their voices but not their names are known by millions yet they have helped to shape 20th-century music and the film catalogues their successes and struggles to stay in the music business.

They have spent their careers helping other singers - Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, Sting, Stevie Wonder among many - to become famous but without any credit. Director Morgan Neville goes some way towards rectifying that in this remarkable tribute to artists who have chosen to stay in the margins. You'll listen to music in a new way after seeing this.
