UNITE leadership challenger Gerard Coyne has been suspended from the union, his spokesman said yesterday.

The West Midlands regional secretary, who is challenging Len McCluskey, is allegedly under investigation for “certain issues that have arisen,” according to an email reportedly sent out to branches yesterday afternoon informing them he had been suspended.

However Unite had not confirmed or denied the suspension at the time of going to press.

Mr Coyne’s alleged suspension comes just a week before the result of Unite’s election is announced, on April 28.

The deadline for voting concluded on Wednesday.
