Eastleigh win promotion to the Conference Premier, David Ferrer beats Rafael Nadal and Lewis Hamilton bids for first-ever third successive grand prix win

FOOTBALL: Eastleigh have gained promotion to the Conference Premier after a 2-1 victory over Basingstoke Town, in front of 1505 fans at Silverlake Stadium.

The victory sees them win the Conference South with two games to spare.

Basingstoke had to play the majority of the game with defender Rob Adams in goal after goalkeeper Louis Wells was taken off injured.

Yemi Odubade opened the scoring for the home side after 66 minutes and 13 minutes later, Ben Wright doubled the score.

Liam Enver-Marum replied for Basingstoke in the 90th minute but couldn’t deny Eastleigh the victory.

The promotion means that they will play in the fifth tier of English football for the first time in their 68-year history.

TENNIS: David Ferrer claimed a stunning victory over fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal to reach the semi-finals of the Masters yesterday.

Top seed Nadal, eight times a winner of the French Open, had been aiming to recapture the title after an eight-year unbeaten stretch at the tournament was halted by Novak Djokovic in the final 12 months ago.

Another showdown between the two looked on the cards for Sunday, but sixth seed Ferrer earned a remarkable 7-6 (7/1) 6-4 victory.

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton is steeling himself for more of a fight from his title rivals tomorrow as he bids to win three grands prix in a row for the first time in his career.

Although Hamilton was left grumbling about his Mercedes towards the end of the second practice session for tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix, the 29-year-old still managed to again outpace the rest.

“Something’s not right with this car,” moaned Hamilton.
