Hodgson 'won't resign' if England exits

ROY HODGSON insisted yesterday that he won’t resign even as England were staring over the precipice of a humiliating World Cup exit.

A Luis Suarez brace sunk the Lions’ hopes of escaping the group stages and left them praying last night that Italy would beat Costa Rica.

The Azzurri would also need to thrash Uruguay in their final game to give England a chance of reaching the knock-outs on goal difference.

Before last night’s game Hodgson admitted his team’s chances were “unbelievably slim” but said he still had no intention of ending his contract before its current end of Euro 2016 cutoff.

“I don’t have any intention to resign,” he said.

“I’m bitterly disappointed, of course, but I don’t feel I need to resign, no.

“On the other hand, and if the FA think I’m not the right man to do the job, that will be their decision, and not mine.”

The Football Association gave its public backing to Hodgson a few months ago but support would be likely to wane if England fail to make it out of the group stages for the first time since 1958, while defeat against Costa Rica on Tuesday would be the first time the side has ever lost all three first-round matches.

Suarez was in a wheelchair less than five weeks ago, but was fit enough to tear England to pieces in Sao Paulo.

The Liverpool forward beat Joe Hart with a precise header in the first half and then capitalised on a mistake by Steven Gerrard to kill off England after Wayne Rooney’s equaliser.

“It was one of the best games I’ve played,” said Suarez. “It’s an amazing moment for me.

“Maybe a few days ago I thought this wouldn’t be possible.

“Before the game too many people in England laughed about my attitude over the last few years.

“This is a very good time for me. I want to see what they think now.”
