THE United Arab Emirates said yesterday five of its diplomats were killed on Tuesday in a bombing in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar.
The blast killed 11 people and wounded 18 at a guesthouse of Kandahar Governor Homayun Azizi, who was wounded in the attack along with UAE ambassador Juma Mohammed Abdullah alKaabi.
The Taliban denied planting the bomb, believed to have been hidden in a sofa, even as the insurgents claimed other blasts on Tuesday that killed at least 45 people. No other group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
The death toll from two large Taliban bombs near government offices in Kabul rose to 38 overnight, with 72 wounded.
A suicide bomber struck at about 4pm as workers were leaving a compound of government and legislative offices.
The second bomb, which was planted in a car, exploded minutes later after security forces had rushed in to help the victims.
