Labour government 'won't reverse prison privatisation'

A LABOUR government will not reverse prison privatisation, shadow prisons minister Jenny Chapman said yesterday.

Prison Officers Association general secretary Steve Gillan quipped back: “It’s no wonder you’re behind in the opinion polls.”

The Blairite MP told POA confernce: “I am happy for a good provider to run a good prison — whoever they are.”

Mr Gilian responded: “The reality is for me that a Labour government should not be talking like that. A Labour government shouldn’t be privatising in the first place.

“We want a Labour government in power that is going to give us back our prisons where they rightfully belong — in the public sector.”

Mr Gillan also said Labour should bring other public services back into public ownership.

He said: “We want to make sure Royal Mail is in the public sector, we want to make sure utilities — such as energy — are in the public sector. We want to make sure the NHS is safe in public hands. That’s what a Labour government should be doing.”
