Jackie Lomax
Against All Odds
(Angel Air Records)
4 Stars
Jackie Lomax died unexpectedly at the end of last year and just before he had completed this album.
It was recorded over five years with a big input from his old musical partner Brian Jones from the legendary Liverpool '60s combo The Undertakers.
But this is not an album giving an excuse to wallow in nostalgia. It is too good for that.
Lomax was going to be the next big thing on the Beatles' Apple label.
The fall-out between Lennon and McCartney after the money men intervened to exploit tensions effectively left Lomax high and dry.
But he fought back and over the years has produced some classic albums.
This is one, with 12 original and beautifully delivered songs. The band's excellent too, with superb sax from Jones and delightful harmonies from the backing vocalists.
If you're unfamilar with Lomax, this is as good a place to find out about an original talent as any.
