CANOEING: Women’s K2 pair Angela Hannah and Jess Walker claimed Britain’s third gold medal of the World Cup in Hungary yesterday with victory in the 200 metres.

They had been finalists in the 500m won by compatriots Lani Belcher and Rachel Cawthorn.

Team GB took home three golds, two silvers and a bronze from the competition.

 

FOOTBALL: Steven Gerrard promised not to “leave anyone hanging” yesterday over whether or not he quits international football after the World Cup.

The 33-year-old will captain England in Brazil this summer, before “chatting to … a few important people around me whose opinion I respect.”

He is only six caps shy of David Beckham’s record haul of 115.

 

RUGBY UNION: Japan secured their place in next year’s World Cup yesterday after winning the Asian five nations championship.

They’ll be in Pool B at England 2015, lining up against Scotland, South Africa, Samoa and the US.

They thrashed Hong Kong 49-8 to secure qualification.

 

BASKETBALL: Great Britain got their EuroBasket qualifying preparations off to a good start yesterday with a comfortable 64-42 win over Germany.

Temi Fagbenle contributed a game-high 17 points, while Rachael Vanderwal added 12 in her first game of the campaign.

 

GYMNASTICS: Max Whitlock took European gold on the pommel horse yesterday.

The 21-year-old, who claimed bronze at London 2012, had to see off Olympic champion Krisztian Berki to claim his podium spot.
