CAMPAIGN groups will stage a “March Of The Mummies” protest this Halloween to highlight the “archaic” behaviour of some employers towards pregnant women.
Pregnant Then Screwed, which supports and promotes the rights of mothers, announced yesterday that it would lead demonstrations in Westminster and Belfast.
The group is encouraging those attending to “dress up as mummies” and demand improvements to employment and childcare rights.
It also wants to see an increase in the time allowed for pregnancy and maternity employment tribunal claims to be filed, from three to six months.
Working Families charity head Sarah Jackson said: “There is no place for these illegal practices in British workplaces, and no woman should lose her job simply because she’s had a child.”
Some 54,000 new mothers are forced out of their jobs in Britain each year.
