Greenpeace activists arrested for Champions League protest

GREENPEACE activists were arrested before the Champions League final at the weekend as they tried to unfurl a protest banner from the stadium roof.

Ten Arctic campaigners hid inside a concrete tube at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz arena for three days as they prepared to expose a 50-square-metre banner reading “Stop Gazprom — Save the Arctic.”

The Champions League sponsor is at the forefront of an oil rush that risks polluting a pristine region and worsening climate change, the environmental group argues.

“Gazprom has paid millions to splash its logo across the biggest and best sporting event in the world. They want to persuade us they’re a normal company — but they’re not," said Greenpeace UK executive director John Sauven.

“Their dangerous Arctic drilling programme threatens a beautiful region and the global climate. That’s what our protest was about. (Competition organiser) Uefa should ditch Gazprom.”
