Wigan end City's Cup dream - again

Wigan stunned Manchester City again to keep their FA Cup defence going

Man City 1-2 Wigan

Jordi Gomez and James Perch were the heroes as Wigan stunned Manchester City again to keep their FA Cup defence going with victory at Eastlands yesterday.

Gomez converted a penalty conceded by Martin Demichelis and Perch tapped in as the holders booked a semi-final with Arsenal.

Samir Nasri pulled one back as City fought hard but they were unable to prevent a repeat of Wigan's shock victory in last year's final.

The result was a tactical triumph for Wigan manager Uwe Rosler, a former hero in City's colours.

For City boss Pellegrini, the decision to rest Vincent Kompany, David Silva and Fernandinho - with Wednesday's trip to Barcelona in mind - backfired and hopes of a domestic treble are over.

Wigan were determined to deny their moneybags opponents any space or time, a plan that worked perfectly.

Ivan Ramis almost put through his own net for the visitors early on but City always appear vulnerable with Demichelis in the back line.

On 27 minutes he was beaten by Marc-Antoine Fortune and clumsily brought the forward down. Gomez rifled home the spot-kick.

Wigan piled forward after the break and it paid off within two minutes of the restart when James McArthur broke through on the left.

He pulled the ball across goal and Perch nipped in ahead of Gael Clichy to tap home.

Pellegrini sent on James Milner, Edin Dzeko and Silva after 53 minutes and City began to turn the screws.

They broke through on 68 minutes when Nasri's low drive crept beyond Scott Carson.

Dzeko and Sergio Aguero came close and City keeper Costel Pantilimon charged forward for a last-gasp corner but Wigan held on.
