Thieving care home manager jailed

A care home manager was jailed for eight months yesterday for stealing money from “extremely vulnerable” clients.

Rachel Stokes siphoned money for a year from three residents at the Gloucestershire home to fund a gambling habit.

Ms Stokes, from Dursley in Gloucestershire, had been entrusted with the cash cards of clients, due to their significant learning difficulties.

She used them to withdraw up to £400 each month to pay for bingo sessions.

Her clients did not notice the thefts and the wrongdoing was only uncovered following an audit by Gloucestershire County Council.

Judge Jamie Tabor QC told Stokes that her actions were “the most shocking breach of trust.”

“That care home looked after some of the most vulnerable people in society, some who could not even speak or articulate their concerns,” the judge said.

“This was the most shocking breach of trust. I think you know that.”
