THE Palestinian government and the UN condemned the latest murder by Israeli settler extremists in the occupied West Bank yesterday.
Mutaz Bani Shamsa was shot in the head by a settler at a protest near Huwwara, south of Nablus, which had been organised to show solidarity with hundreds of hunger striking Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
The settler rammed his car into demonstrators blocking a road. When they kicked his vehicle and pelted it with stones, the driver opened fire.
Associated Press photographer Majdi Mohammed was shot in the hand.
Palestinian Authority spokesman Tareq Rishmawi said the “heinous crime” had been committed “under the cover provided by Israeli forces and government.”
He also held Israel responsible for the declining health of the hunger strikers.
UN special co-ordinator for the Middle East peace process Nickolay Mladenov said: “This deplorable incident must be promptly and thoroughly investigated and all suspected of being involved must be prosecuted.”
