A flat and lifeless Tottenham slumped to their third league defeat of the season after a first-half goal from Newcastle United’s Loic Remy ensured Alan Pardew’s men returned home with all three points.
Spurs came into this match having scored just nine goals in the league, and their lack of creative spark, despite some high-profile summer purchases, was all too evident with a poor performance all round.
They were unable to match Newcastle’s high-tempo start to the match and struggled to get back into the match after going behind.
The goal came on 13 minutes from Remy, who collected a pass from Yoan Gouffran before running through on Brad Friedel, rounding the US keeper and slotting the ball away. It was Remy’s seventh league goal of the season.
Newcastle’s goalkeeper Tim Krul was in inspired form, denying the hosts with a series of superb saves.
“I thought first half we were the better team,” said Pardew. “In the second half, they changed it and caused us no ends of problems.
“Our goalie was terrific and the centre halves — they were the stars.”
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas was disappointed with the result.
“We had so many good chances, the result was very unfair,” he said.
