Delegates condemn EU rights attack

STUC delegates slam the erosion of democratic, social and trade union rights by European Union legislation and legal judgements.

STUC delegates yesterday slammed the erosion of democratic, social and trade union rights by European Union legislation and legal judgements.

Clydebank TUC delegate Tom Morrison told Congress: "While workers march throughout Spain, Portugal, Greece and elsewhere in Europe, large sections of our labour movement are sleepwalking into an EU straitjacket."

He said measures such as the 2012 Stability Treaty and the EU-US free-trade agreement were driving wholesale privatisation of public services.

Delegates also supported a call for a referendum on Britain's membership of the EU and, in the event of a vote for Scottish independence, on Scotland's membership as well.
