The Invisible Woman (12A)

Directed by Ralph Fiennes

3 Stars

Charles Dickens's secret love affair with an 18-year-old budding actress is a complete revelation in Ralph Fiennes's slow-burning and brooding romantic period melodrama.

Told in flashback, it shows the married Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones) directing a school production of one of Dickens's plays as she reminisces about her clandestine relationship with the great literary genius.

And it reveals how the middle-aged Dickens, in a wonderfully upbeat and flamboyant performance by Fiennes, became captivated by the teenaged Nelly at the height of his career, a passion which continued until his death.

Jones gives a poised and delicate performance as the naive Nelly who is stifled and bound by Victorian society and morality.

A fascinating film which shines a whole new light on Dickens.
