Saints’ English duo sold for a combined fee of £55m

Shaw and Lallana move north to United and Liverpool

Southampton pocketed nearly £60 million with the sales of Luke Shaw to Manchester United and Adam Lallana to Liverpool yesterday.

In what seemed like an everything-must-go sale at the club, Shaw was the first out of the door as he joined United on a four-year deal with the 18-year-old becoming the most expensive teenager in the world.

Shaw signed a four-year deal thought to be worth £100,000 a week after passing his medical on Thursday night and being shown around Carrington on Friday morning.

He is the second signing in two days to join Louis van Gaal’s new look side after Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera was officially announced on Thursday afternoon.

And the left-back was pleased with the move.

“I am thrilled and excited to be joining Manchester United,” said Luke Shaw, after signing for the club.

“I have been at Southampton since I was eight years old and I would like to thank them and the fans for everything they have done for me.  I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that.

“I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life and also looking forward to learning from the world-class players and management at the club.”

Assistant manager Ryan Giggs said: “Luke is a very talented young left-back with great potential.

“He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton and has all the attributes to become a top player.”

Later yesterday afternoon, Lallana agreed a move to Liverpool in a deal worth £25m for the Southampton captain.

The Merseyside club first showed interest in the England international before the start of the World Cup but felt the initial asking price was too much.

But after an impressive showing in Brazil, the club moved swiftly for the 26-year-old with ex-Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino thought to be keen on making Lallana his first signing at new club Tottenham.

The former Bournemouth player has spent the last 14 years at Southampton but will join ex-Southampton forward Rickie Lambert at Anfield next season.

Fans at St Mary’s next season will be hoping there will be no more departures this summer, with Arsenal looking at French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

New manager Ronald Koeman will have a sizeable transfer kitty to rebuild the side and has already earmaked Livorno striker Paulinho and FC Twente midfielder Dusan Tadic as possible additions to the squad.
