Eric Cantona joins Ritzy workers' picket line

FOOTBALL legend Eric Cantona joined cinema strikers on the picket lines in London this weekend as they fought for a living wage.

Workers were out at the Ritzy cinema in Brixton and at the Hackney Picturehouse, where staff walked out last week after bosses pulled out of talks at the last minute.

Official picket lines started at the Ritzy before moving on to Hackney.

Workers are fighting to increase their hourly pay from £7.24 to the London living wage rate of £8.80.

Picturehouse cancelled the meeting with entertainment union Bectu representatives and announced it would raise pay by 29p — leaving workers still well short of the living wage.

“The move by Picturehouse and Cineworld to scupper our talks on Wednesday is a destructive and dishonest trick,” said Bectu general secretary Gerry Morrissey.

“Until today we thought we were on course to an amicable agreement with Ritzy management but their move to buy off the determined and well-organised members in the Ritzy with another cut-price pay offer is a big mistake.”
