Tories pilloried over £45k sale of Thatcher-signed champagne bottle

A LABOUR MP accused extravagant Tories of “living in a parallel universe” yesterday after it emerged that a bottle of champagne signed by Thatcher sold for an eye-watering £45,000 at the party’s summer fundraising shin-dig on Wednesday.

Commons Leader Andrew Lansley revealed the bottle was signed by the former prime minister after his Labour shadow Angela Eagle raised the issue during business questions in the Commons.

Ms Eagle said: “This government are living in a parallel universe.

“Chancellor George Osborne claimed that we’re all in this together but government figures show that in the last two years one million more people fell into absolute poverty.”

She added that Tory peer Lord Finkelstein had “let the cat out of the bag” when he said that future Tory cuts will “undoubtedly fall on poor people” and asked whether the peer had attended the event.

Mr Lansley said he had not seen Mr Finkelstein at the Summer Ball.

Regarding the staggering price raised by the bottle, he said: “I did not buy the champagne, which was not bought for drinking purposes, I think it was bought because it was signed by Margaret Thatcher.”
