Paris: Climate fight ‘must accept developing states’ needs’

“ADDRESSING climate change should not deny the legitimate needs of developing countries to reduce poverty and improve living standards,” Chinese President Xi Jinping told the UN climate summit in Paris yesterday.

He said that an eventual global deal must include aid for poor countries and acknowledge differences between developing and established economies.

His remarks echoed the point made at earlier summits by developing countries’ leaders, who insist those countries that pollute most should take the most decisive steps.

The 1997 Kyoto Protocol required rich states to take a lead in cutting carbon dioxide emissions, but the US refused to sign up to it.

“The future of the people of the world, the future of our planet, is in your hands,” said UN secretary-general Ban Ki Moon.
