Virgin rail support staff strike over toilet water

CLEANERS and maintenance staff on Virgin East Coast trains will strike tomorrow in a long-running dispute with a sub-contractor.

Virgin employs ISS to clean trains on the main line from London to Edinburgh.

Rail union RMT said that the profiteer had cut staff numbers so severely that routine jobs such as refilling trains’ water tanks were being neglected, leaving toilets unable to be flushed. Staff also have grievances over pay and conditions.

“Not only are RMT members suffering through attacks on their working conditions but passengers, paying eye-watering fares, are being hit, as well as the cuts’ impact on the quality of service right down to the level of taking toilets out of service on these long-haul routes,” said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.

RMT has called on Virgin to intervene, but its ISS staff at Kings Cross, London, will strike for 24 hours from 8pm tomorrow.
