News in Brief: 30/04/14

RESCUE: The RAF were called to winch a woman free from between two turrets of Wells Cathedral yesterday.

The 68-year-old was on a guided tour of the Somerset cathedral when she fell 30 feet and got stuck between the two turrets.

She suffered arm and pelvic injuries, Avon and Somerset Police said.

INFRASTRUCTURE: MPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of the HS2 high speed rail project on Monday night.

The High Speed Rail Bill received a second reading by 452 votes to 41 despite a highly publicised revolt by Tory backbenchers.

An amendment designed to derail the Bill won the support of 34 Tories, 14 Labour MPs, all three Plaid Cymru MPs and Green MP Caroline Lucas. Around 40 Tory MPs abstained.

HEALTH: More than two-thirds of inpatients with learning disabilities in specialist units are being given anti-psychotic medication, census analysis revealed yesterday.

It also found that over half of the patients had experienced an “incident” during the three months preceding the census date such as self-harm, an accident, physical assault on the patient, hands-on restraint or seclusion.

The census was commissioned in response to the uncovering of abuse at the private Winterbourne View Hospital in 2011.
