Tottenham 2 West Ham 2

Kane and spurs leave it late to snatch point writes JOEL SHARPLES

Tottenham have now rescued 16 points from losing positions this season after a goal deep in stoppage time salvaged them a point against West Ham yesterday afternoon.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino praised the “personality, big character and good energy” of his players after they negated West Ham’s 2-0 lead with two late goals from Danny Rose and Harry Kane.

After a bright start his side faded until Rose capitalised on a weak punch from Adrian with a volley that bounced into the ground and over the keeper’s flailing arm on 81 minutes.

“We started very well and created some clear chances,” said Pochettino. “They scored and the team was a little bit nervous in the way that we managed the ball. We need to improve how we play between the start of the game and the end of the game.”

Spurs could have been 2-0 up after 10 minutes with Nabil Bentaleb seeing his rasping long-range effort spectacularly saved and Kane’s flick coming back off the post after he latched onto a long ball from Rose.

However they appeared to have half a mind on the upcoming Europa League and Capital One Cup matches and some sloppy passing allowed West Ham to grow into the game.

Nobody was more guilty of this than Moussa Dembele, who sold Kyle Walker short in the area, allowing Aaron Cresswell to collect the ball and deliver a pinpoint cross to Cheikhou Kouyate. The midfielder gave Hugo Lloris no chance, powering a header home from five yards.

West Ham became increasingly dominant, with Cresswell’s tight-marking of Andros Townsend totally negating any threat down Tottenham’s right wing. They doubled their lead on 62 minutes when Diafro Sakho arrived at the back post to volley Mark Noble’s cross past Lloris.

Sam Allardyce’s side appeared to be cruising to victory when Rose’s goal galvanised a lacklustre Spurs team. A late surge into the box from Kane drew a clumsy challenge from Alex Song and Kane dispatched the resulting penalty on the rebound after Adrian had saved his first effort.

It proved to be the last kick of a game that West Ham will be bitterly disappointed not to have won.
