A European Union special prosecutor said yesterday that there were “compelling indications” that up to 10 captives were killed for organ harvesting during the 1998-99 Kosovo war.
However, Clint Williamson warned that the level of evidence was not yet sufficient to prosecute.
The EU probe followed a 2011 Council of Europe report alleging that the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) ran detention camps on Albania’s border during Kosovo’s war for independence from Serbia.
It alleged that civilian captives had been killed and their organs sold as part of an illegal trade linked to senior KLA commanders.
Mr Williamson said he did not at this stage wish to name any individual suspect.
The chief prosecutor of the Special Investigative Task Force said his investigation also largely confirmed other reports that there had been a campaign of persecution of Serbs, Roma and other minorities by the KLA leadership.
