St Pancras contract cleaners balloted for strikes

CONTRACT cleaners at London’s St Pancras International railway station started a ballot yesterday on strike action over attacks on their jobs, pay and working conditions.

They are members of the transport union RMT and work for contract firm Initial Facilities.

RMT says the firm is introducing a “re-organisation” which threatens staff cuts of 30 per cent, blocks progress through pay grades and changes hours and conditions which the union says will be “devastating.”

Acting general secretary Mick Cash said: “This is nothing short of an attempt by Initial to work a reduced number of staff till they drop, solely in the interests of maximising profits.”

He warned that the union would “turn St Pancras International into the central battleground in the fight against cleaning companies” attempting to exploit workers for fat profits.

“We have no intention of letting them get away with it,” he said.
