Nurses demand pay rise after discovering bosses' bonus regime; NHS brings in Disney to motivate children; Atlantic solo rower recovers in hospital after rescue off US coast

PAY: Nurses denounced NHS bosses yesterday after it was revealed management is being awarded bonuses while staff struggles to survive.

The Royal College of Nursing expressed its outrage at the 6 per cent increase in NHS executive directors’ pay.

Most front-line workers are expected to see their salaries freeze.

“This is the worst kind of double standard,” said RCN general secretary Dr Peter Carter., “and makes a mockery of [the government’s] insistence that fairness has been at the heart of their decision-making on public sector pay.”

CHILDREN: Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be teaching British kids about fitness and health, authorities announced yesterday.

The partnership between Disney and NHS campaign Change4Life will see the beloved cartoons advising youngsters to exercise every day.

“It can be hard for parents to find things to keep the family busy and entertained during the school holidays,” said Public Health England director for children, young people and families Dr Ann Hoskins.

Dr Hoskins believe the new campaign will provide adults as well as children will all information needed to keep active and eat well.

ROWING: A solo Atlantic rower who suffered injuries in a storm was recovering in a New Jersey hospital yesterday after a dramatic rescue by the US coast guard.

Scottish television presenter Niall Iain Macdonald began his 3,400-mile journey from New York on June 5, aiming to reach Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis at the beginning of September.

Mr Macdonald’s voyage to raise money for the Scottish Association of Mental Health was cut short when he suffered head and back injuries after a huge wave hit his 26-foot boat.

He sent a distress signal and was rescued by a US coast guard cutter at around 6.30am on Saturday.
