The musical moniker of Canadian Brad Weber, Caribou's touring drummer, Pick A Piper's debut is a varied suite of super-cool dance music.

Over the album's eight songs Weber puts together some seriously infectious electronic beats and rhythms with a little help from his friends on Born Ruffians, Braids and Roby Sons.

The flat vocals of the breezy Cinders And Dust bring to mind 1980s New Order, while South To Polynesia is a more moody and aggressive creation, its barrage of discordant horns slugging it out with some relentless drumming.

Highly produced, with tons of detail that rewards repeated listening, Pick A Piper certainly sounds great and no doubt it will delight hipsters in pop-up bars the world over.

But where is the heart? Where is the emotional punch that means the music stays with the listener rather than simply washing over them in a pleasant but forgettable aural massage?
