ANGLICAN monks will join today’s massive march against austerity in London today in protest at the “greed and selfishness” of the Con-Dem coalition.
The Franciscan monks in their traditional brown robes will be part of the diverse congregation on London’s streets for the People’s Assembly demonstration.
Brother Robert of the order, which is based in London but has members across Britain, told the Morning Star that “Christianity places a quite firm obligation from those who have more to share to look after those who have less.
“At the moment the government seems to promote an atmosphere that is rather, well, different.”
He said that he and his brothers strongly believe they need to stand up against the coalition’s cuts.
Prime Minister David Cameron said in April that “Jesus invented the Big Society” and he was “just continuing God’s work.”
But to Brother Robert the government stands fro a society “where greed and selfishness are promoted.
“I don’t think that’s what Christianity is really about.”
