LABOUR leader Ed Miliband faced renewed pressure to offer the people a say on EU membership yesterday.
He was speaking on “rebuilding trust in politics” in the Essex town of Thurrock, which lost its Labour majority in Thursday’s council election when Ukip won six seats
Thurrock has been identified by Mr Miliband as a key target for the 2015 general election.
But cross-party campaign People’s Pledge, which campaigns for an in-out referendum on Britain remaining in the European Union, said the Labour leader’s refusal to offer Britons such a vote was “a strange way to go about rebuilding trust.”
The town was the site of the People’s Pledge’s first constituency referendum in April 2012, which saw an overwhelming 89 per cent say they wanted a vote on EU membership.
Mr Miliband’s “refusal to trust people to have a say epitomises why Labour supporters feel the party’s leaders aren’t listening,” warned People’s Pledge co-founder Stuart Coster.
