Morton 0 St Johnstone 1: Allan Moore disgusted as late drama denies Ton historic semi-final spot

by Douglas Hill at Cappielow Park

Referee John McKendrick was at the centre of a controversial climax to this Scottish League Cup quarter-final between Morton and St. Johnstone with Saints grabbing the winner in the final minute of the game.

The match looked to be heading for extra time when referee McKendrick awarded St Johnstone a soft free kick 25 yards out. From the resulting set piece, Morton's Nacho Novo was adjudged to have charged down Steven May's initial effort, and St Johnstone scored with the retake when May's shot was spilled by Morton keeper Nicolas Caraux, allowing St. Johnstone's  Gary McDonald to score from the loose ball.

It was a cruel blow for Morton who had matched the Scottish Premiership side throughout, and Morton manager Allan Moore failed to appear for the after match press conference, such was his disgust at the manner in which his side were denied their first League Cup semi-final appearance in 30 years.

A pulsating first half saw St Johnstone go closest when Nigel Hasselbaink hit the side netting on 40 minutes. Morton's best player in the opening period was the energetic Dougie Imrie who twice came close with stinging efforts from 35 yards.

The match really came to life though with 15 minutes to go. St Johnstone's David Wotherspoon struck the outside of the post with a sublime free kick from 25 yards. Then it was Imrie's turn to come close for Morton with a free kick before former Ton player Chris Miller passed up two good chance in as many minutes to give the Perth side victory.

So it was left to referee McKendrick to steal the headlines in time added on, and it's St Johnstone who go into the semi final draw where the Perth side will look to make history by becoming the first ever St Johnstone team to land a major trophy.
