Fenerbahce said yesterday that they won’t play in the league until those responsible for an attack on its team bus are caught, while football authorities reacted to the incident by suspending Super League matches for a week.
The Turkish Football Federation met with the sports minister yesterday and came to the decision to postpone all league fixtures for a week, as well as this week’s cup fixtures.
The bus was shot at on Saturday in northern Turkey on the team’s return to the airport from a 5-1 victory against Black Sea side Caykur Rizespor.
The driver, named as Ufuk Kiran, was hit in the face and taken to hospital but is in a stable condition.
Club officials said the attacker used a shotgun.
Fenerbahce vice-president Deniz Tolga Aytore said that the attack was a “terror” act that could have killed players and club officials.
Aytore said: “To play football isn’t all that important when the lives (of players) are at stake.”
The club had called for the league to be suspended on Sunday, saying: “We think it’s unavoidable to suspend the league until this dark attack is enlightened.”
