LEICESTER readers raised an astonishing £1,840 for the Morning Star Fighting Fund on Saturday at the annual festive dinner organised by the city’s readers and supporters’ group, the Indian Workers Association (IWA) and the local Communist Party branch.
Former Labour MP Alan Simpson said the paper would play a vital role in promoting and developing the positive socialist vision at the heart of Jeremy Corbyn’s new politics.
“We have to be outlining and helping to shape the future we want, not just defending Jeremy from right-wing attacks,” said the regular Star columnist.
The meeting also heard from National Assembly of Women president Anita Wright on the ideology behind Tory attacks on working people, Morning Star editor Ben Chacko on the paper’s rollercoaster year and former IWA leader Avtar Sadiq on the threat posed by Narendra Modi to India’s secular constitution and way of life — before tucking into some delicious curry.
