Spain: Podemos to vote on coalition with PSOE

MEMBERS of Spain’s left-wing Podemos party will vote next week on whether to enter a coalition government with the Socialists, leader Pablo Iglesias said yesterday.

But Mr Iglesias said he felt “betrayed” the day after meeting negotiators from the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and Ciudadanos, who have proposed a coalition to break a deadlock in the hung parliament since the December 20 election.

He said conditions set by Podemos for its support “were received with inflexibility” by the two parties.

PSOE spokesman Antonio Hernando responded that Mr Iglesias was blocking the deal and betraying voters who want to see an end to the conservative People’s Party government.

The Podemos leader blocked the last attempt to form such a coalition, objecting to the inclusion of the pro-business Ciudadanos.

Podemos was formed by academic and television presenter Mr Iglesias in 2014.
