Another 333 Caparo steel jobs saved

ADMINISTRATORS for Caparo steel announced yesterday that 333 more jobs had been saved at the troubled company.

PwC said the Caparo Tubular Solutions business had been sold to the Gupta family, whose interests include the Simec and Liberty House groups.

In October, Caparo announced 452 jobs were to go across the country, including 300 in the West Midlands, after it entered administration.

A total of 76 jobs in the West Midlands and south of England were saved last week when PwC confirmed Caparo Testing Technologies had been sold.

Workers’ unions at the company GMB and Unite welcomed the decision. GMB regional organiser Russell Farrington said: “This is a sliver of good news for workers in the steel industry.

“We have made progress on the energy prices front for the UK steel industry. We now need action on dumping.”

Unite national officer Harish Patel said: “We will also be seeking assurances and commitments from the new owners on investment and training which is so crucial to sustaining skilled, well-paid jobs in our manufacturing sector.”

Earlier this month, Caparo steel chief executive Angad Paul died after falling from his penthouse flat.
