News in Brief: 09/05/14

COURTS: Former News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks took advantage of police’s sensitive handling of phone-hacking allegations to set in train an “elaborate little plan” to keep evidence hidden, the Old Bailey heard yesterday.

Ms Brooks, husband Charlie Brooks and News International security chief are accused of concealing or destroying evidence from police.

Prosecutors said they took advantage of being given forward notice to hide evidence.

HOUSING: The number of tenants facing the threat of eviction has surged to its highest level in more than a decade, government figures revealed yesterday.

Around 47,220 landlord possession claims were recorded in county courts between January and March against tenants.

Housing charity Shelter said it has seen evidence of tenants falling victim to “revenge evictions,” after they had complained to their landlord, letting agent or council about a problem with their home.

CRIME: The mother of teenager Jamil Palmer, who was stabbed to death this week, begged for help in finding his killers yesterday.

Scotland Yard released a statement from his mother, who did not want to be publicly named, saying she is in “unimaginable” pain.

She said: “Do the right thing in Jamil’s memory. Forget your street code, it is not grassing and it is not cool. Just tell the police what happened and who was involved.”
