Ukraine troops exchange fire with anti-Kiev rebels

UKRAINIAN government forces traded fire with anti-Kiev rebels today in spite of new President Petro Poroshenko’s stated push for peace.

Loud booms and shelling were heard in downtown Sloviansk, an epicentre of the struggle of eastern separatists against Kiev’s fascist turn.

The bombardment came a day after Mr Poroshenko revealed that daily negotiations were taking place between Ukraine, Russia and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe to negotiate a ceasefire.

However, as the nominally “pro-Russian” militants in the east have rejected Moscow’s previous overtures to lay down their arms, it is unclear if the talks will be able to resolve the crisis.

Acting Kiev Defence Minister Mykhailo Koval said yesterday that the president was working to bring the conflict to an end “in the quickest time period” — though he did not give a date.

Sloviansk resident Svetlana said: “They will end the shooting only when they erase us from the face of the planet. Only then the war will be finished.”
