Poor Orient squadder early lead and chances

Leyton Orient 1-3 Exeter

AN APPALLING defensive display saw Leyton Orient squander a first-minute lead against Exeter City at Brisbane Road on Saturday.

Unfazed by their early knock, a Tom Nichols goal sandwiched in between a brace from AFC Bournemouth loanee Jayden Stockley saw Exeter see out a comfortable away win that moved them up to 14th place in League Two.

After a six-game run without a win the Grecians will be glad to have taken a confidence-boosting three points ahead of their FA Cup replay against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Leyton Orient on the other hand struggled throughout.

Ollie Palmer’s early goal was not enough to reverse the fortunes of the east London club who have slipped down to 11th after just two wins in their last 10 games.

It went from bad to worse for Orient manager Ian Hendon as Jay Simpson, an Arsenal academy product with 20 goals this season, missed two penalties — the first denied by the post and the second by keeper Bobby Olejnik.

With “Hendon out” echoing round the ground the under-fire manager expressed his frustrations at his side’s sloppy defending after the game:

“You’ll have to ask the boys to explain what they’re doing when those balls are going in the box,” he said.

“We’re doing the right stuff but the players have to take responsibility, I’m not going to name names, but the players have to take responsibility when they go on the pitch simple as that.”
